Walthamstow Area Guide
Walthamstow is located in Northeast London, 6.4 miles from Charing Cross, covering the postcode
E17. In 2004 it was identified as one of the 35 major centres in Greater London and was voted ‘Best Urban Village’ by Time Out magazine. With a great range of character pubs and restaurants, and good transport links via mainline services and the Victoria line to central London, Walthamstow is a very enviable traditional location for office space that will suit a variety of businesses.
What businesses does Walthamstow suit?
If you need close proximity to London but do not need the importance of working within the city’s major industry centres, such as banking, publishing or film post-production, Walthamstow could be a great location for you. It escapes the high mark-up of the inner City both in terms of rental costs and living costs, and offers a mix of traditional establishments and modern ones to suit a variety of tastes.
Walthamstow is therefore a good choice for diverse companies that need something for everything. The area is also well known for its entertainment provisions, such as the famous dog track, so there is plenty to do after working hours.
Transport
Walthamstow is saturated with transport links. It is associated with six underground stations -
Walthamstow Central Underground station, Blackhorse Road Underground station, Walthamstow Queens Road railway station, Wood Street railway station, Highams Park railway station and St James Street railway station. These offer great variety and mobility and allow ease of access into central London.
Liverpool Street: 36 minutes
Waterloo: 40 minutes
Euston: 19 minutes
Canary Wharf: 52 minutes
Walthamstow Central is also a mainline commuter station serving the South East.
Eating
Despite Walthamstow’s distance from central London, there are some great restaurants around. Trattoria La Ruga (59 Orford Road, Walthamstow, London, E17 9NJ) offers no printed menu, but writes the daily dishes on a blackboard in chalk, resulting in food that is vibrant and fresh. Another fine eatery is The Village Kitchen (41 Orford Road, Walthamstow, London, E17 9NJ), a refined restaurant that employs subtle lighting and simple bold colours to create a relaxed atmosphere for its clients. The menu is extensive and the food fresh, and the unobtrusive background music makes it the perfect location for young couples. Walthamstow also has a great range of local takeaways and restaurants with Turkish and Mediterranean influences.
Going Out
There are numerous traditional pubs around Walthamstow, most of which offer a great selection of beers and a nice friendly atmosphere. The Dog and Duck (222 Chingford Road, London, E17 5AL) and The Castle (15 Grosvenor Rise East, Walthamstow, London, E17 9LB) are both good examples, the latter of which has just underground extensive redevelopment. Bar-wise, Celsius (166 Hoe Street, London E17 4QH) is a contemporary venue offering a selection of European food, good cocktails and weekend DJs.
Otherwise you may want to check out The Soul (300 Hoe Street, London E17 9QD) which combines a large selection of cheap and tasty cocktails with music from all genres, including funk and soul. Continue your evening at Mr Jacks (40 St. James's Street, Walthamstow, London E17 7PF) for a relaxed combined bar/club atmosphere.
