South Bank Area Guide

South Bank is one of London’s fastest growing districts, and in recent years has become a cultural centre, housing numerous theatres, gallery and concert halls. Situated minutes away from Waterloo mainline station – which provides regular services to the South West – and Waterloo underground station, the second busiest on the tube network, South Bank is an enviable location for office space in London due to its superior transport links. From Waterloo, all of London is very easily accessible. South Bank is adjacent to the south bank of the River Thames and contains the postcode SE1.

The area has also experienced extensive development in recent years and a business partnership group, The South Bank Employers’ Group, is dedicated to the ongoing improvement of the area for employees, visitors and residents. This makes now a great time to relocate to South Bank, as you can be sure the urbanisation that has already taken place will be built upon and not left to stagnate.

What companies does South Bank suit?

View of St. Paul's and the Millenium Bridge at duskAny businesses that need superior mobility in London would benef it from offices in South Bank. Waterloo station is very well co nnected in terms of tube lines and mainline services, and has more platforms than any station in the whole of the UK. The Waterloo & City line places Bank – in the heart of the city’s financial district – only 4 minutes away, making South Bank an ideal location for those who need regular access to Square Mile.

The area also suits start-ups and small businesses that need to relocate to London but cannot afford the high prices that West End and inner city properties demand. South Bank’s vibrant cultural facilities also provide good entertainment for workers, whereas these can be somewhat sparse in the City.

Transport

Situated within walking distance of London Waterloo, South Bank has unsurpassed transport links. Waterloo offers extensive mainline services to the South West, and is linked to four of the tube lines, Bakerloo, Northern, Waterloo & City and Jubilee lines.

Eating

South Bank’s expansion as a cultural hotspot has resulted in some fine eateries being opened, many of which have unique selling points. Caffè Vergnano (Southbank Centre, Belvedere Road, London, SE1 8XX) has existed in various guises since 1882 and was recommended by none other than Gordon Ramsay, who thinks its coffee is absolute perfection. Alternatively, Canteen (same as above) includes a great bar that focuses on British beers, and a menu that serves up healthy ‘comfort food’ within a modern, clean environment.

Going Out

South Bank has some great pubs to explore, and an electric mix of weird and wonderful bars. Concrete (The Hayward, Belvedere Road, SE1) lives up to its name, and has a bright pink cement mixer at the entrance, after which you’ll find a buzzing atmosphere with a banging electronica playlist. Or there’s The Archduke (Concert Hall Approach, SE1), South Bank’s first wine bar, which offers regular live jazz sessions and, of course, a great wine list. In terms of nightclubs, you really cannot beat Ministry of Sound, (103 Gaunt St., London, SE1) the original London superclub that has spawned a world-famous music empire.

With over 400 species of fish, the London Aquarium is a marine lover’s paradise. It showcases life from all over the globe, including the rainforest, coral reefs and the Indian Ocean. It has recently (early 2009) undergone a £5 million refurbishment, so now is a great time to visit.
