London Area Guides

London is one of the largest financial centres in the world; joint top with New York and is home to over 100 headquarters of leading international companies. In London there are more overseas banks than any other city in the world, with a grand total of 480, it is the host of the London Stock Exchange and the society of Lloyds of London Insurance market.

London boasts the most extensive public transport in the world, with the largest metro systems and bus network. The bus network services 8,000 buses in it city, which runs 700 routes and cater for over 6 million passengers per weekday (over 1.5 billion a year).

The capital city also is home to the Eurostar that travels at high speed to Paris, Lille and Brussels.
Tramlinks will be seeing a £54 million worth of improvements until 2015. The London Port is the second largest in the UK after Grimsby and Immingham, transporting 53 million tonnes of cargo a year. London has the largest city airspace in the world with Heathrow being the busiest airport in the world. There are plans for a sixth terminal and third runway, which has caused some uproar in neighbouring London boroughs, with many not wanting the airport to construct a third runway.

For business travel London City Airport is the most central. London is the second most visited city in the world after Paris, attracting almost 15 million tourists a year. Museums such as the National History Museum and Victoria and Albert Museum, art galleries, such as the Tate Britain, Tate Modern and National Gallery are just a few reasons for the tourism traffic alongside the history and politics behind the city. In entertainment, London is the host to the world renowned West End, where many film premiers are hosted as well as, where the Royal Ballet, English National Ballet, Royal Opera and English National Opera are based and perform at the London Coliseum, Sadler’s Wells Theatre, Royal Opera House and Royal Albert Hall.

The capital is home to Europe’s busiest shopping area, Oxford Street and is also an international hub of fashion alongside New York, Milan and Paris. In the world of music, London plays host to a vast amount of music arenas, Wembley Arena, O2 Arena, Brixton Academy and Hammersmith Apollo are just a few.

London is also the first city to host the Summer Olympic Games three times and there is a £7 billion worth of improvements planned for the 2012 Games.

The Greater London Authority has twinning arrangements with; Berlin, Oslo, New York, Bogota, Kuala Lumpur, Johannesburg, Moscow and Kuwait City and has friendship agreements with Baku, Oslo, Tokyo, Beunos Aires, Sofia, Dhaka, Tehran, Mumbai, Delhi, Istandbul, Bucharest, Istanbul, Bejing, Algiers, Zagreb and Podgorica.
